(no subject)

[From here.]

He takes the stairs to the upper corridor two at a time, hoping fervently that the captain's taken the night watch on the bridge, that he won't have to comm Inara's shuttle to wake him with this kind of news --

Up the corridor from the kitchen, and up the shorter stairway to the bridge, and he stops at the sight of the familiar silhouette in the pilot's seat.

"Mal?"

Mal's been sleeping at odd hours lately, so Simon's hopes are fulfilled, for what any of that is worth.

At least he wasn't caught playing with Oscar.

"What is it?"

Because when Simon strides with Purpose like that, it's for a reason.

The trading station on Lilac that they robbed years back wasn't in Amesbury.

Close enough.

Mal's standing, now, and trying his best to not picture the man he killed -- murdered.

In self-defense.

"And you would go."

There's very little Mal feels like doing less than going to Lilac. It's on the edge of Reaver territory, and he's got no rutting desire to go there unless it is absolutely necessary.

"You think we'd be enough?"

There's about two seconds where Mal looks like he is sincerely lost for words. There's not much worth actually articulating here, to Simon. He's stated his view of the situation; Mal has to figure out his.

I have to tell the crew I'm leading them toward where Reavers have been. Still are.

Again.

Simon's seen Mal agree to things he hasn't wanted to agree to before.

Haltingly, "Go...wave Crowley.

"I'll set the course in."

Mal knows how.
