"...handed us each one chocolate, and closed the bag. With this look of we never speak of this."

Simon's sitting cross-legged on the edge of the bed, with Kaylee's feet (in warm fuzzy socks) in his lap.

He's grinning.

"And we drove back to the Abbey in complete silence."

"It's funny now."

So's he.

Kaylee reaches for her glass. Takes a sip. Puts it down.

"It would've been okay if it went south." With a smile that's a little crooked.

"I know."

A little more serious.

"If for some reason it hadn't worked out ... it's not as though it would have ruined everything. I just ..."

A small shrug.

"Wanted to have that. I wanted you to have that. If I could."

Kaylee regards him for a moment. Pushes herself up, wincing only a little bit. Sits with her hands in her lap.

Says, soft, "Ain't every day somebody pulls off a heist for my sake."

In mild protest: "It wasn't a heist. We paid for it."

"...Simon, you had disguises."

"Yes, but ..."

He considers that.

"It was a caper," he pronounces finally. "Not a heist."

"Well, now that we got our vocabulary straight." She's rolling her eyes. "See if I ever try to say thanks ever again."

"Well, I couldn't very well let you thank me for something I didn't do," he says, deliberately sententious.

"Why, what would happen if I did?"

Deadpan: "Civilization would collapse."

"...that's all?" Kaylee shakes her head. "Think that's a risk I'm willin' to take."

Simon's deadpan expression dissolves, and he starts to laugh.

Kaylee looks perhaps inordinately pleased with herself.

Cheerfully: "Didn't know the collapse of civilization was somethin' so funny."

"It was more the 'that's all?'," he tells her, reaching for his glass.

"Well, if you can get all fake serious, figure it's not out of bounds for me." Said serenely.

A sip of lemonade, and he puts the glass back down.

"Definitely not."

His hand comes to rest on her feet, in an absent caress.

She watches him for a moment, smiling.

And after a moment: "You could come back here." With a hand resting beside her.

He looks at her hand.

And smiles, and gently lifts her feet out of his lap to slide further up the bed.

"Don't think that means you get to steal all the pillows," she says, settling into him.

"Of course not," he says.

And steals one pillow.

Kaylee looks at him sidelong. "You're just lucky you're cute."

He drops a kiss on her temple. "I've often thought so."

"...six is a little bit excessive, ain't it."

"No, six is fine. You need the support."

And sliding closer, "I'll just have to make up for the missing pillow."

Isn't Simon's shoulder just as comfortable, anyway?
