The first few times he wakes in the middle of the night, eyes opening as though someone flipped a switch from SLEEP to

(robot, she called him once; he's never told her how that stung)

WAKE, he's inclined to attribute it to having too much on his mind. Between Kitty having been arrested and Kaylee spending time with Nyarlathotep, really, it's enough to keep anybody awake. Enough to give anybody nightmares, come to that. He doesn't seem to be having any, though -- just can't seem to stay asleep.

By the third night, it's becoming worrisome.

So he slips quietly out of bed, (careful not to wake Kaylee -- she's had a rough night), and pores over the medical sections of his encyclopedia, trying to find out if this is symptomatic of any particular sleep disorder.

Something's wrong with the datareader's screen, though. It keeps slipping out of focus.

It's a little irritating.

On the fourth night, after talking to River, he doesn't bother trying to sleep; instead he shuts himself in the infirmary to research this ... whatever it is.

That's the original idea, anyway. Sometime around midnight he realizes that it's turned into planning the rescue mission for Kitty Pryde instead. Which is all to the good -- somebody has to. Maybe this is why he can't sleep; his subconscious knows he has work to do.

He's got five separate plans written out by four o'clock, ship's time. It's a little too soon to show them to anyone else, but they're brilliant. Can't fail. He feels energized, his brain positively crackling, and has to force himself to go back to his bunk to lie down for a couple of hours instead of staying awake to work on them more.

In the morning -- well, two and a half hours later in the morning -- he can't find his notes. Someone's taken them and replaced them with pages and pages of incoherent scribbling.
